In 1864, at Galesburg,Michigan, he was united in marriage withMiss Helen Foote, a native of Galesburg,Michigan, and a daughter of Milo Foote,who was one of the early settlers of thatplace. Two children came to bless thisunion, Mollie and Jessie. The former mar-ried Harry Courtwright, of Downers Grove,Du Page county, Illinois, and they haveone son, Harry. Shortly after his marriage Mr. Shafterwas commissioned first heutenant of Com-pany B, Seventeenth United States ColoredInfantry, later being promoted to rank ofcaptain of Company E, same regiment,with which company and regiment heserved until mustered out of the service atNashville, Tennessee, April 25, 1 866. Theregiment was organized at Xaslnille, Ten-nessee, and was intended as an see if colored troops would act well inbattle and what sort of soldiers could bemade of them. They participated in thebattle of Nashville and showed by theiractions that they could be trusted under fireof the enemy. After being mustered out of serviceCaptain Shafter returned to his old home,where he engaged in farming on the oldhomestead until 1879.
