Moon is one of the old settlersof this neighborhood, having come herewhen but a boy. He served this countyas sheriff two terms, was sergeant-at-armsof the house of representatives, and hasalways taken an active part in politicsand in every move where his influencecould be exerted for good. D. S. Avery was born near Coldwater,Michigan, in the year 1845. He servedthree years in the war of the rebellion,being an orderly for Major GeneralPalmer. He came from the war to Kan-sas in 1S65 and settled in the north partof Lyon county. Mr. Avery served fouryears as justice of the peace in AgnesCity township and has been in businessin Emporia for fourteen years, has beena member of our city council, is an all-round, wideawake citizen, one who hashelped to make Emporia and Lyon coun-ty what they are to-day.
