Frequently what at first seemed afavorable case has proved dangerous when considering thelateral movements of the jaws. Many such cases may beimproved by slight grinding of an angle of the tooth orthe tip of a cusp when this portion is slightly elongated. In inlays where stress of mastication is a factor ofconsideration they should always be removed in the directionfrom which such stress comes. There should also be flatseats antagonizing any force brought to bear from thisdirection. Generally speaking, proximal cavities should be soprepared that there will be no difficulty in removing thematrix Where there is but slight separation. Fortunately the lingual wall is generally the weaker, consequently it is a less sacrifice to cut away this wall to. Fie- 4 Fie. 5 permit the easy removal of the matrix and this is the logicalprocedure in the upper incisors and cuspids (the teeth we aredealing with mostly), unless we have an abnormal occlusion. In preparing a single proximal cavity in an upper incisor, first break down the weak enamel walls, using chisels orhatchet and hoe excavators. Then with smooth, square-endfissure burs in the right angle entering from the lingual thecavity may be formed. The cavity should be slightly larger at the lingual thanit is at the labial to permit the removal of the matrix. The THE DENTAL SUMMARY 423 axial wall should be as nearly flat as possible and parallelwith the long axis of the tooth. The incisal and gingivalwalls should be at right angles to this. These walls areformed with the sides of the bur, while the square end formsa flat seat under the labial plate. Any imperfections followingthe use of the bur may be remedied by the use of the hatchetand hoe excavators. All margins sho
