Imre Nagy, the man on the bridge sculpture was the man people of Budapest nominated to become the new Prime Minister during the uprising in 1956. When the Soviet troops invaded he was arrested along with thousands of others. He was secretly charged with organizing the overthrow of the Hungarian people's democratic state and with treason. He was secretly tried, found guilty, sentenced to death and executed by hanging in June 1958. His trial and execution were made public after the sentence had been carried out. He was buried in a mass grave
