Snake head, illustration. A snake's head contains the eyes, nostrils, mouth, brain (yellow), and a special sensory structure called the vomeronasal or Jacobson's organ (in front of the brain). When a snake flicks out its tongue, the forked tip picks up scent particles from the air and then places them in direct contact with this organ.
