As stated in Canadian Railway andMarine World for May, the CanadianNational Rys. are testing a storage bat-tery car on their Ottawa-Montreal linebetween Belleville and Trenton, Ont., miles. The car carries nothing togenerate its own power; its source ofpower being electric storage batteries,which are charged at a central stationand the car operates on the energy thusstored. An illustration of this car isgiven herewith, also a plan showing the persons in this compartment, which isconnected by a doorway to the middle orsmoking compartment, where the seats,4 on each side of the aisle, are similarlyarranged, seating 16 passengers. Theseats in the main compartment are up-holstered in green plush, and those inthe smoking compartment are of third compartment, 13 ft. long, isfor baggage, and also contains the switchcabinet and heating apparatus. The sidedoors of this compartment are of the. Electric Storage Battery Passenger Car. interior divisions and seating arrange-ments. It is of steel construction, andweighs complete tons; is 55 ft. longinside coupler knuckles, 52 ft. 2 in. longover vestibules; and 35 ft. 10 in. betweenbolster centers. The extreme width is8% ft., extreme height 12 ft. 5% in.;from rail, and the storage battery hold-ers, on the bottom of the car, clear therail by 10^4 in. The side posts are of 2x 2 x Vi in. T section, and the side sheath- sliding type, designed to facilitate thequick loading and unloading of trunksand other baggage. The side windowsare fitted with blinds and the front win-dows are equipped with drop sash. Thecompartment partitions are fitted withlarge panes of plate glass, as are alsothe doors between compartments andthe vestibule doors. The ceiling is fin-ished in agasote.
