Curved roof line and bright orange painted walls of a Japanese Shinto shrine.

The roof outline here shows an important feature of the Hachiman-zukuri style of Shinto shrine architecture. The shrine itself, Isaniwa Jinja near Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku, enshrines Emperor Chūai, Empress Jingū, and their son Emperor Ōjin. A number of its buildings and possessions are designated Important Cultural Properties. Legend has it that the shrine was originally located where Emperor Chuai and Empress Jingu bathed when they visited Dogo Onsen, probably some time in the fouth century. It moved to its present location in the fourteenth century, and several of the important buildings including the main building, the honden depicted here, date from 1667. The shrine was most recently renovated in 1970.
