Sculptures of bread buns on the outside walls of the Salvador Dali Theatre-Museum in Figueres, Spain

The Dali Theatre-Museum was originally the 19th century Municipal Theatre in Figueres but was destroyed during the civil war and Dali created his museum from its ruins. He designed it, during the last years of his life, with the building itself becoming a surrealist art work - the outside walls have small sculptures of bread buns, reflecting Dali's lifelong interest in the symbolism of bread. The top of the museum walls are decorated with golden mannequins and giant eggs. It has been described as the largest surrealist object in the world. The museum contains works from all periods of Dali's life, from his experiments with Impressionism, Futurism, Cubism, etc to his Surrealist creations and the works of his last years including a number created especially for display in the museum. There are also a small number of works by other artists collected by Dalí. Since his death, in 1989, the museum has also contained Dali's grave in a crypt in the centre of the museum.
