Deforestation in the Amazon. Satellite image of the region around the mouth of the Amazon River (upper left) in northern Brazil. North is at top. The dark green colour shows the extensive tropical rainforests of the Amazon Basin, but light brown patches across lower frame show areas where the forest has been cleared (deforestation). The area at bottom centre is the Sierra Carajas region of mountains and mining activities. Also seen (at centre) is the lake that has formed behind the Tucurui Dam (built 1985). The Atlantic coast is seen at upper right. The area seen here is about 1800 kilometres across. Data acquired by a Landsat satellite.
