The supply of accurately quarried stones seems tohave given out, however, as the work advanced, and upon thesouthern side there is much irregularity in the shapes andsizes. Some of the inner bjocks of the lower step bear abordering fillet, which proves them to have been originallyintended for the outside, and to have been rejected on ac-count of some defect. Instances of this are the fifth stoneupon the eastern, and the fifth stone upon the western side,counting from the north.
