Charles D. Walcott (1850-1927), US palaeontologist, with his family at Olmsted, Provo, Utah, USA. Charles Doolittle Walcott began his career as a fossil collector in New York state, becoming assistant to the palaeontologist James Hall. Walcott joined the US Geological Survey in 1879, becoming its director by 1894. He specialised in invertebrate fossils dating to the Cambrian period, excavating over 65,000 specimens from the Burgess Shale between 1910 and 1924. He was Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 1907 to his death.
