Protea "cardinal", a cultivated fynbos species, grows in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa. Kirstenbosch forms part of the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). Itis famous for fynbos, which makes up 80% of the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the world's richest floral kingdoms. Known especially for species of the Protea and Erica families. Fynbos contains nearly half of Southern Africa's plant species.
