A typical 19th century corpse gate or Lych gate at the entrance to a British churchyard. It was also known as a corpse gate, Lych gate, lycugate, lyke-gate, litch gate, litchgate, wych gate and resurrection gate. The word litch or lych was an ancient term for a corpse. The gate was designed to protect the coffin bearers as they prepared for entering the church.
