London Heathrow Airport, London, UK. 28th Nov, 2023. A Virgin Atlantic Airways Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner has taken off from Heathrow airport as flight VS100 - or Flight 100 - bound for New York JFK Airport flying entirely on sustainable aviation fuel. The aircraft will cover the 3,500 miles across the Atlantic without burning fossil fuels, thereby emitting a fraction of the global warming gases normally associated with air travel. The flight will use 60 tonnes of SAF; a combination of 88% fuel derived from used fats & oil from food industry & 12% synthetic plant-based kerosene
Airliner used for the flight was Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner G-VDIA, named Lucy in the Sky. The type is able to fly over 250 passengers over a 7,635 nautical miles (8,786 mi; 14,140 km) range.
