The present struc-ture, designed by Gov. Alexander Spotswood, wasbuilt of blue and red glazed brick, in 1710. Here worshipped the Colonial Governors and mem- — 59 — bers of the House of Burgesses. A large square pewwas provided for the governor and a beautiful silkdrapery hung from brass supports, secluding himfrom the rest of the congregation when desired. Thepews for the members of the House were placed to-gether across the transepts. This part of the church. BRUTON CHURCH, WILLIAMSBURG was built by and for the members of the House ofBurgesses. The old Register, badly mutilated, found a fewyears ago, contains records from 1662 to 1797. Thefirst entry in the vestry book is dated April 18, 29, 1683, the volume records: The ParishChurch is at length completed. The fees of theParish clerk were three pounds of tobacco forregistering every christening and burial in ye Par-ish. The Sexton to have ten of tobacco for every — 60 — grave that he diggs. June 5, 1682, it was agreed thatthe rector be paid ye sum of sixteen thousand, sixhundred and sixty-six pounds of tobacco and caske. In 1699, the Jamestown Church was abandonedwith the town, and Bruton Church became its recog-nized successor.
