A 19th century British engraving of gensdarmenmarkt, Berlin, Germany with the Royal Theatre (left) and New Church. The Gendarmenmarkt square is the site of an architectural interest with notable buildings such as the Berlin concert hall and the French & German Churches and a statue of poet Friedrich Schiller. It was built in the 1600's by by Johann Arnold Nering as the Linden-Markt and rebuilt by Georg Christian Unger in 1773. Its name is derived from the cuirassier regiment Gens d'Armes, who had stables here until 1773. The present buildings were restored after being damaged in WWII
