For early use the plants should be started in a hot-bed or cold-frame, but seed for winter cab- bage should be sown in a seed bed early m the spring. Some of the large, late var- ieties seem to do best if the seed is sown in the hills where they are to remain, and in that case sow two or three seeds where each plant is desired and then pull iip all but the strongest.
