The trap used is the Empire trap; the meter is the No. 2, Model C, of the American District Steam Co. L. M. F. The data furnished are not suflScient- ly complete to indicate clearlv the cause of the trouble. It is possible that the supply main is not properly insul- ated, so that most of the steam is con- densed before it reaches the heating coils, and it is also evident that the amount of steam furnished is insufli- cieut to heat the house. If the pipes are cold, it seems likely that the trap is not working properly and that the water backs up in the coils as a conse- quence. As nearly as can be ascer- tained from the description given, there are about 500 square feet of sur- face in the mains and the same amount in the coils, and even if the mains are carefully insulated, the proportion of surface in them is altogether too large. A 3-inch pipe would answer the pur- pose and, as it would contain only about one-third as much steam, the rate of condensation in the main would be materially reduced. Of course the price paid and the method of measuring the amount of steam furnished will depend upon the bargain that has been made. Ordina- rily, only the amount condensed in
