Tea is a major industry in Bangladesh and grows in the low hills of Chittagong and Sylhet. There are about 158 tea gardens with a total of 47,938 hectares under tea cultivation with yearly production of about 50 million kilos of tea. The industry provides employment to about 150,000 ethnic people with 500,000 dependants. The tea plantation workers in Sylhet are mostly ethnic Santals. Plucking is a specialized skill.
