Louis Daguerre (1787-1851), French chemist and inventor of the photographic process named after him (daguerrotype). Daguerre's patent was acquired by the French government in 1839. This daguerrotype was taken by US photographer Charles Richard Meade (1826-1858). Meade travelled to Bry-sur-Marne in France in 1848, unaware that Daguerre disliked having his own portrait taken. Daguerre initially refused Meade's request, but later agreed to sit for this portrait while Meade was a guest at his home. Meade made five daguerrotype portraits of Daguerre, which he later exhibited in New York, USA.
