David, Machine Gun Corps statue by Derwent Wood (1871 - 1929). Erected in 1925 the Machine Gun Corps, who fought in the Great War, used the figure of David as a symbol on their memorial. The inscription on its plinth reads: 'Saul hath slain his thousands but David in his tens of thousands'. There is a wreath laying ceremony on the second Saturday of May every year.
