Compare the length andspeedy lines of one of the old galleys, and theirbeautiful proportions, with the tower-like, Chi-nese-pagoda style of naval architecture of themiddle ages. A mere glance at the picture ofthe Great Harry, or of some of the famousships of the Spanish Armada, will show the dif-ference; but when g, comparison is made of theseas for which the two styles of ships were con-structed, we may not smile at the builders ofthose towering, melon-sided old warriors anymore than at the seemingly improbable voyagesof the ancients.
