Animal sperm, as sketched by Leeuwenhoek. The sketch was made in 1679, and shows the sperm of rabbit () and dog (). Antony van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) was a passionate microscopist. He used single lenses, rather than compound elements, as the former gave better image quality at that time. He ground these ultra-small lenses himself, something over 400 of them in his lifetime, and kept active in research until his death at age 90. Even so, he didn't live to see his ideas on reproductive biology vindicated; that had to wait until the work of Pasteur in the 19th century.
