Returningvillage ward by another road, we passed the cottages ofDr. WilHam H. Draper, of New York, and of ProfessorRachemann, who married a niece of Miss Sedgwick, and drove by a private road through spacious groundsto one of the old-time mansions of Lenox, formerlyowned by Judge Walker, a gentleman as much honoredin Lenox as the Sedgwicks were in Stockbridge. Hisson, Judge William, had a beautiful daughter, Sarah, who became the first wife of Senator David Davis. Itcame about in this way: at the time Senator Yancey andJosh Billings were wild boys at Lenox Academy, was studying law in the village with old JudgeBishop, and being captivated by the lady, wooed andwon her before his studies M^ere completed. A shortdistance above the Walker place, Mr. Lanier, of NewYork, has chosen the site of a pretty modern villa, one. 0 2; O hJ 00 ^ a s* a o« < V H s O H? U Lenox in 1883 219 of the most commanding and beautiful spots in allBerkshire. The hill slopes down to the shores of thefamous Stockbridge Bowl. Southward the view ispartly closed by the jagged pinnacles of MonumentMountain, and far below that by the blue dome ofMount Everett, the loftiest peak of the Taghanics, wliile on the north the view ends with the double peaksof Greylock. Near by, on the bluff-like north bank ofthe Bowl, stands the little red cottage where Haw-thorne wrote his Tanglewood Tales and House ofSeven Gables. We drove down, making quite a de-tour to reach it, and saw on a closer inspection a small,one-story cottage, half farmhouse, with green bhnds, and a long L on the west, adjoining a barn. Theauthors study was in the southeast room, and com-manded a beautiful view of the lake and the mountainvista described on the south. Man
