After the war Captain Smith was attached to theWashington Navy-Yard, and on July 25, 1866, wascommissioned as commodore. He then held the posi-tion of chief of the Bureau of Equipment and Recruitingin the Navy Department for four years. This is anoffice which requires confirmation by the Senate of theUnited States. C, and at the age of sixteen (in 1S5 3)he became a member of the scientific part}- (assistanttopographer) in an exploration and survey for a Pacificrailroad, under the command of Captain J. W. Gunnison,Topographical Engineers, , and during this expe-dition, in addition to his other duties, was employed inthe collection of botanical specimens. Again, in 1X58,he became a member of the Pacific Wagon-road Expe-dition, under charge of Colonel F. W. Lander, C. E., inthe construction of a wagon-road from the Smith Pass,Rocky Mountains, to the Pacific coast, serving as quar-termaster and commissary of the expedition, in additionto his duties as assistant engineer.
