An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Ernst Werner Siemens (von Siemens from 1888, 1816–1892) and an illustration of his armature. Siemens was a German electrical engineer, inventor and industrialist. He recognised the potential of the dynamo-electric principle and its practical application. The dynamo machine that his company developed using the 'Siemens armature' helped to put electricity to use first in lighting. An economical way to turn mechanical energy into electrical energy, it marked the beginning of the electrification of the world.

An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Ernst Werner Siemens (von Siemens from 1888, 1816–1892) and an illustration of his armature. Siemens was a German electrical engineer, inventor and industrialist. He laid the foundations for a new age of electricity. He recognised the potential of the dynamo-electric principle and its practical application. The dynamo machine that his company developed using the 'Siemens armature' helped to put electricity to use first in lighting. By providing an economical way to turn mechanical energy into electrical energy, it marked the beginning of the electrification of the world. Siemens's name has been adopted as the SI unit of electrical conductance, the siemens. He founded the electrical and telecommunications company Siemens. This card is from a 1929 set entitled 'Scientific Inventions and Discoveries' (35 cards in the series). The firm of R and J Hill Cigarettes was established on Shoreditch High Street, Hackney, London in the 1700s. In the twentieth century the company issued cards with their Sunripe and Spinet Oval cigarettes. The firm expanded to include H Archer and Co and issued cards, like this set, under 'The Spinet House' brand. The company no longer exists.
