Disability. Wheelchair user resting on a bench. This man has suffered a spinal cord injury, which has left him partially paralysed. Loss of mobility and sensation makes people susceptible to pressure sores. Well-fitting wheelchairs, pressure- relieving cushions and user education are all vital in preventing pressure sores. Photographed in Bangladesh, where the Motivation Charitable Trust began a project in partnership with the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP), in Dhaka, in 1991. They worked to produce a wheelchair using locally available materials for people with spinal injuries.
