Thesportsman cannot be mistaken as to the gun beingproperly fastened, whilst its position and short hori-zontal travel to the right make it the handiest, aswell as the easiest, to manipulate. There are many forms of breech mechanismactuated by the top-lever. The most common isthat known as the double-bolt. This bolt travelsin a longitudinal slot in the breech-action body, and engages with the lump on the barrel by enter-ing two notches cut one into each division of theunder lump. Occasionally it is made to engagewith one only, that nearest the breech, which is asingle bolt; and in some special guns the lump pro-jects rearward from beneath the barrels, in order toform a better and stronger bearing for the holding-c i8 The Breech-Loader,. As may be inferred, this form of breechmechanism serves to hold the barrels down uponthe bed of the breech-action body, but does not inthe least secure the breech ends of the barrels to theface of the standing breech. The firing of every charge exerts the greateststrength in a line with the barrels. The tendencyis towards the barrels and standing breech beingforced asunder, and consequently the two shouldbe bound together as solidly as possible. Unlessprovided with some specially designed mechanismthe gun on every discharge will open at the jointthrough the springing of the metal of the breech-action body, which cannot be made of sufficientstrength and substance to prevent this movementalthough the better the metal and construction theless is the gaping. Every gun provided with aholding-down bolt only will, as a result of wear, gape permanently at the breech, and longer use willincrease the breach until
