Sacred to the memory of those brave andgood men, who died whilst itnprisoned in thisCity, for their devotion to the cause of A nieri-cas Independence. On the left, as we enter at the lowerBroadway gate, is the monument, Inmemory of Captain James Lawrence, of theUnited States Navy, who fell on the ist dayof June, 1813, in the 3 2d year of his age, in 123. Clinton Hal!, cor. Bceknian and Nassau site of icmple Court. the action between the frigates Chesapeakeand Shannon. The tribute on the pedes-tal reads: The heroic commander of the frigateChesapeake, whose remains are here deposited,expressed ivith his expiring breath his de-votion to his country. Neither the fury ofbattle, the anguish of a mortal wound, nor thehorrors of approaching death could subduehis gallant spirit. His dying words were,DOXT GIVE UP THE SHIP. Alexander Hamiltons tomb is marked bythe conspicuous white marble monumenti n the south grounds near the Rector streetrailing. It would require much longer time thancan be spared at present to enumerate all theinteresting things about old Trinity. Itis safe to say that a visit is well worth thetrouble.
