In the dark, before streetlights were lit, a man assaults a lone woman, who turns out to be Suzette Noiret, and is rescued by Hildebrand. Badly shaken, she is taken to a nearby ice cream shop in Haarlem, the Netherlands, where the lady owner offers her a glass of water. From the Camera Obscura, a collection of Dutch humorous-realistic essays, stories and sketches in which Hildebrand, the author, takes an ironic look at the behavior of the 'well-to-do', finding them bourgeois and without a good word for them.
