View of Calcutta from the Esplanade

Calcutta (Kolkata) on the River Hooghly in India is viewed in this image from the esplanade which is a favoured place for an evening stroll. The modern city was founded by the East India Company in the 17th century as its trading headquarters. It was protected by Fort William and was the capital of India until 1911. The infamous incident of the "Black Hole of Calcutta" took place here during the battles between the Indian ruler of the region and the British under Lord Clive. It was the scene of intense communal violence at the partition of India in 1947. It is under rejuvenation today with the growth of commerce and industry in India.
