Leith coat of arms and motto on red sandstone on a building in Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.

This shield bearing a galley on the sea with Virgin Mary and Jesus in her arms is the seal of Leith. The phrase on top of the shield "Sigillum Oppidi de Leith" means "The Seal of the Town of Leith". Underneath, the word "Persevere" is Leith's Motto, which is believed to have been brought to the community by 11th century French traders, when this crest became the flag of the area.
