Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Freshwater ostracod (Heterocypris sp.). Heterocypris is a genus of freshwater osctracods in the class Crustacea. Ostracods are a part of the Crustacea in the class Ostracoda. They are sometime referred to as seed shrimp. Their bodies are flattened from side to side and protected by a bivalve-like shell (chitinous or calcareous composition). Ostracods are grouped together based on gross morphology. Marine ostracods are part of the marine zooplankton. Many ostracods (especially the Podocopida) are found in freshwater and are part of the freshwater zooplankton.
