Bacterial food poisoning tests. Chemist and microbiologist using immunomagnetic capture and time-resolved fluorescence methods to detect Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria in food samples. This strain of the E. coli bacterium leads to food poisoning, and can cause bloody diarrhoea and kidney failure, particularly in the elderly and the very young. It is found in contaminated beef and milk. Transmission can be prevented by thoroughly cooking meat and pasteurising milk.
