Terra Nova Antarctic ponies. British Army officer Lawrence 'Titus' Oates (1880-1912) with ponies at the Cape Evans base camp on 23 May 1911 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Led by Robert Falcon Scott, a shore party of 33 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Nineteen Manchurian ponies were used, but by 9 December 1911, those remaining had weakened on the journey to the South Pole and had been shot to provide food. Scott, Oates and three others died in 1912 returning from that journey to the South Pole.
