COMMUNICATION WELDING ARMATURE SHAFT New York, Sept. 18, 1911. To the Editors: I note in your issue of Sept. 2 an editorial on the subjectof welding armature shafts in which mention is made ofthe methods followed in San Francisco and also of thefact that the oxy-acetylene process might possibly beadapted to this class of repair work. No mention wasmade of the Thermit process and I thought you might be. Welded Armature Shaft interested in knowing that this process is not only adaptedto the work but has been used very extensively and withmarked success. The accompanying illustration shows a Thermit weld ona 3-in. armature shaft used in the motor of a 50-hp electrichoist on a 50-ton Shaw electric crane. Welds on arma-ture shafts of trolley motors have been made in the samemanner and at slight cost with a very considerable savingin time.
