A late Gothic courier's case, France, 16th century. A rectangular, leather-covered, beech wood case with an arched lid, and iron strap fittings. The front is decorated with ornamental open work plates. Hasp, and a lock cover with a hidden latch. There are two fastening loops on each side. The bottom is cushioned and covered with leather. The interior of the lid has the original slightly torn silk lining, a copper plate print of a saint is pasted on it, dated 1577.
