From June 2, 1896, to Dec. 21, 1898, he filled a mission tothe Northern States, where he per-formed successful missionary work inIndiana, Chicago and Michigan. Dur-ing the last eighteeen months he pre-sided over the Michigan 15, 1899, he was called, togetherwith Elder H. C. Carlisle, to fill a sixmonths mission among the people ofthe West Mountain mining district. Atthe organization of the Granite Stakehe was chosen and set apart as secondcounselor in the Stake superintendencyof Y. M. M. I. A. When the MurrayWard was organized Oct. 28 1900, hewas chosen to be Bishop of the same,and was unanimously sustained in that. |n)siiion by the members of the is serving successfully in that ca-r>acity at the present time. CUMMINGS, James Devalson, firstBishop of Wilford Ward, Granite Stakeof Zion, is the son of Benjamin Frank-lin Cummings and Mary Jane Yearsley,and was born at Willard, Box Eldercounty, Utah, Sept. 30, 1859. His fatherwas a pioneer of 1847. James was bap-tized Oct. 3, 1867, in Salt Lake City byElder Thomas Higgs. His youth wasspent in working on the farm, and atother labor, and his opportunities forobtaining an education were not verygood.
