Some of thetrees standing in California are estimated to be between twoand three thousand years old. The heart of the tree is thought to be indestructible bythe decay that is usual in other woods exposed to atmosphericinfluences. This certainly does not rot under ordinary climaticaction. Furthermore, the wood does not shrink like othertimbers, since it contracts from the ends and not from thesides or edges, as is usual with other varieties. * Specimens of these trees are not allowed to be taken bytourists from the National Reservations.
