The flowers are small and white, having a four-parted calyx anda tubular corolla, with two exserted stamens. The fruit is an ovate, two-celled and many-seeded capsule. The plant flowers in July and August. The rhizome, from 4 to 6 inches in length and i<( inch in thick-ness, is horizontal, somewhat bent and branched with short stemremnants or cup-shaped scars on the upper side, and beset withnumerous long, straight and brittle rootlets.
