Bishop Ridley

Nicholas Ridley was born in c. 1500 and burned to a cruel death in 1555 during the persecution of Protestant Reformers in the reign of Queen Mary. He was educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge and at the Sorbonne in Paris and rose to become Master of Pembroke College and later Bishop of Rochester and subsequently translated to the diocese of London as Bishop in 1550. He was committed to the Reformed Church and helped Archbishop Cranmer with the drafting of the Book of Common Prayer. The untimely death of Edward VI brought controversy on the succession to the throne and Ridley espoused the cause of Lady Jane Grey. The failure of this claim and the accession of Queen Mary to the throne were followed by the Marian Persecutions during which Ridley was martyred at Oxford together with Latimer. Today there is a Memorial to the Oxford Martyrs at the site of the burning of the Bishops.
