The manner of making gold mosaic was peculiarlyeconomical and successful, for each disk was merelycovered with a bit of gold leaf, over which was laida film of glass, thus preserving the gold from dirt andinjury. All the gold mosaics of St. Marks at Veniceare of this kind, aswell as those of , and thesehave stood the test oftime for thirteen cen-turies. Greece boasts alarge number of Neo-Byzantine buildings,there being some-thing over a hundredon Mount Athosalone, while Misitra(the ancient Sparta)and Athens still re-tain typical examplesof the style.
