During the 1940 US Presidential campaign: [Lewis] Wendell Willkie (1892-1944) was a lawyer and longtime Democrat. In 1939 he switched Parties and in '40 was chosen to be Republican Pres. candidate. This photo's caption: "Alfred E. Smith (left), who took a walk from the Democratic Party, greeted Wendell L. Willkie, Republican Presidential nominee, when he arrived in New York City Oct. 23 on a campaign tour. Both Willkie and Smith were scheduled to deliver addresses that night." Smith was a former Governor of New York. To see my other politics-related images, Search: Prestor vintage politics
