Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human intestine probiotic bacterium (Bifidobacterium animalis). Bifidobacterium animalis is an anaerobic, Gram positive intestinal bacterium of mammals, including humans. B. animalis is a probiotic bacterium that enhances immunity, fights tumour growth, improves digestion and can lower cholesterol. Bifidobacterium animalis and Bifidobacterium lactis are frequently utilized as probiotics. Probiotic bacteria can alter the intestine microflora balance, inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, promote good digestion, boost immune function, and increase resistance to infection. Bifidobacterium species are common endosymbiotic bacteria of the gastrointestinal tract, vagina and mouth in humans. Bifidobacterium species also are known to discourage the growth of Gram-negative pathogens in infants. Magnification: x3,400 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
