Shoulder cementoplasty. Frontal coloured x-ray of needles (trocars) entering the left shoulder of patient during cementoplasty, a palliative (pain-reliving) treatment for secondary bone cancer. The needles will inject acrylic bone cement into the humeral head (top of the upper arm bone) of the patient's shoulder, to reinforce the bone and prevent any further damage. This secondary cancer has spread (metastasised) from a primary breast cancer. Cementoplasty can be performed alongside other cancer treatments such as radiotherapy, and can be used, for example, to reinforce bones that are at risk of fracture from lytic bone metastases (lesions that destroy bone material).
