A late 19th century view of Falkland Palace, in Falkland, Fife, Scotland, a royal palace of the Scottish Kings. A hunting lodge existed on the site in the 12th century until expanded in the 13th century to become a castle owned by the Earls of Fife – the famous Clan MacDuff. One of the favourite places of Mary, Queen of Scots, providing an escape from political and religious turmoil. Fire partially destroyed the palace during its occupation by Cromwell's troops during the English Civil war, and it fell into ruin until salvaged in the 19th century by John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute.
