At left is the Sangiran 17 specimen of Homo erectus (Java, 1969, around million years old). At centre is a cast of a recent modern human (Homo sapiens) skull from South-East Asia. At right is the La Ferrassie 1 specimen of Homo neanderthalensis (France, 1909, around 70,000 years old).
