Metal-binding protein bound to DNA. Molecular model of the bacterial metal-binding protein NikR (top) bound to a strand of DNA (bottom, red and green, deoxyribonucleic acid). The NikR protein is involved in the binding and transport of nickel ions. The binding process shown here is known as transcriptional repression. The NikR protein is classed as a ligand-responsive transcription factor. It regulates nickel concentrations in Escherichia coli bacteria.
