Vasco da Gama's armada of 1502. Historical artwork of the twenty ships that sailed in the armada of 1502-3, led by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama (1460-1524). This was the fourth of the armadas sent by Portugal to consolidate the newly discovered maritime trading route from Europe round Africa to India. Armadas such as this one, which was mostly punitive in intent, helped make Portugal a world power. Vasco da Gama's flagship, the Sao Jeronimo, is at upper centre on the page at left. This artwork is from the publication 'Memorias das Armadas' (Memory of the Fleets), held at the Sciences Academy of Lisbon.
