Sow the seed in a hot-bed first week in March, in drills half an inch deep. When the plants are about 2 inches high transplant into another hot- bed or into smnll pots, one plant in each pot; in that way the plants are strengthened and branch out better. Set the plants out about the first of June, about 'i feet apart for early crop, mixing a shovelful of well-rotted manure in each hill. For late crops, or where the soil is heavy, plant 4 feet apart. Water freely when transplanting and protect from the sun for a few days, until the plants are fairly started. A few plants may be raised by sowing seed in a pot or a box in the house.
